The objectives of conducting this research are to know similarities and differences of views between Traditional Grammar and Structural Grammar in the case of the meaning of sentence the bases of sentence analysis and also to know the similarities and differences of views between Traditional Grammar and Structural Grammar in the case of how to analyze a sentence. Data or information needed are obtained from literatures relating to linguistics available at the libraries of Airlangga University and Surabaya University having departments of English. Then the obtained data or information are described. Furher they are analyzed using analysis techniques usually used in language study. The results of this research show that both Traditional Grammar and Structural Grammar have a point of view that a sentence is a part of language either it is verbal or written. Traditional Grammar formulates some definitions of sentence for example Palmers definition 200714a sentence contains a subject and predicate It means that a sentence consists of at least one subject and one predicate. That definition actually makes people unsatisfied. The terms of subject predicate or verb and object however are still used in the patterns of sentence brought out by Structural Grammar. On the one hand in Traditional Grammars opinion a sentence consists of a group of words. So according to Traditional Grammar a smallest unit of sentence is a word. On the other hand Structural Grammar has an opinion that if a smallest unit of sentence is a group of words. so it also unacceptable fully. The next Traditional Grammar bases its sentence analysis on semantic analysis while Structural Grammar bases its analysis on sentence structure or pattern analysis. Then sentence analysis in Traditional Grammar is named Parsing and in Structural Grammar is called Immediate Constituens IC The principle of IC is to divide a sentence into two constituens and then the two constituens are divided again into two and so on until it is obtained a smallest unit of sentence that is morpheme. Through IC analysis the relations among the elements in the sentence can be shown clearly. The similarly between the two in analyzing a sentence is to divide a given sentence before it is analyzed. The way how to analyze a sentence according to Traditional Grammar is establishing the subject. predicate and object of the given sentence making a sentence diagram of the sentence and then analyzing each word in the sentence. Its analysis must be looked from a point of view of 1 kind of word there are 8 plus 1 kinds of word 2 kind of sentence according to its content and structure 3 the existence of inflection and derivation and 4 grammatical categories. And then the way how to analyze a sentence according to Structural Grammar is establishing the sentence pattern of the given sentence there are 25 sentence patterns making a tree diagram of sentence that will be analyzed with IC analysis to show the relations among the elements in the sentence. Its analysis must be looked from a point of view of 1 kind of word based on substitution there are four classes Class1 Class 2 Class 3 and Class 4 and 15 groups Group A to 0 . Eventually it is suggested that next time there will be a comparative research on linguistics that studies about the comparison between Traditional Grammar and I or Structural Grammar and Transformational Grammar and it is also suggested that there will be an Indonesian researcher who is able to formulate a new concept of grammar that makes people satisfied and it is appropriate for Indonesian Grammar
