[ Description ]
Five articles on Housing and Settlement are discussed in this issue. The articles
point out mainly the informal settlement in developing countries in Latin America
(Venezuela and Brazil) and South East Asia (Indonesia). The first article by Nascimento
pictures the poor community efforts in Brazil to build their settlement through the production
processes, information transfer and how they use the information. Heinzmann, Graciela,
Fernadez and Maria present the second article on the ‘My House, My Life’ housing program
in Latin America. Unfortunately the program denied the important role of the community as
the main actor of the program. Some recommendations to a better program are presented as
the result of the study. From Venezuela, we learn the vulnerable situations and risk
conditions in a poor settlement and how to inform, to react and to prevent them in order to
decrease the harms. How the Buginese communities in Indonesia approach a vulnerable
environment to create a dwelling place is presented by Naing, Santosa and Soemarno. The
settlement has been developed in line with the social, cultural and environmental characters.
The last article presents by Purwanita. It points out sustainable concept and approach done
by slum dwellers in an urban area, Surabaya-Indonesia, to improve their quality of
settlement.
