NUMERICAL STUDY 2D UNSTEADY-RANS ABOUT THE INLUENCE OF SQUARE DISTURBANCE BODY ON THE DRAG FORCE REDUCTION OF CIRCULAR CYLINDER IN A NARROW CHANNEL

ABSTRAK
Penelitian untuk mengetahui karakteristik aliran di sekitar bluff body telah
mengalami perkembangan melalui filosofi boundary layer. Boundary layer sangat
berkontribusi dalam pengurangan gaya drag di sekitar body yang dilalui fluida karena
adanya pengaruh shear layer. Shear layer pada permukaan body dipengaruhi oleh
distribusi tekanan yang terjadi pada kontur body. Drag yang ditimbulkan akibat
interaksi shear layer dengan permukaan body sangatlah tidak diinginkan sehingga
dilakukanlah manipulasi atau kontrol medan aliran salah satunya dengan
menempatkan batang pengganggu di depan body utama circular cylinder. Penelitian
ini bertujuan untuk membandingkan dan melengkapi penelitian eksperimen
pengurangan gaya drag yang telah dilakukan sebelumnya.
Penelitian ini dilakukan secara numerik 2D Unsteady-RANS menggunakan
CFD software FLUENT 6.3.26 dengan model viscous Turbulence Model Shear-
Stress-Transport SST k-969 pada saluran sempit. Geometri body yang disimulasikan
adalah circular cylinder sebagai main bluff body dan square cylinder sebagai
disturbance body yang ditempatkan di depan main bluff body dengan rasio sD 016
dan sD 0107. Posisi disturbance body divariasikan pada 945 208304 308304 408304 508304 dan
608304 dengan jarak gap 94804mm. Reynolds number berdasarkan diameter silinder
yaitu ReD 232x104 dan 312x104 untuk konfigurasi sD 0.16 ReD 348x104 dan
468x104 untuk konfigurasi sD 0.107.
Hasil yang diperoleh menunjukkan bahwa penempatan disturbance body
berupa square cylinder pada sisi upstream circular cylinder mempercepat transisi
aliran dari laminer ke turbulen boundary layer. Reduksi gaya drag yang paling baik
terjadi pada silinder dengan sudut SDB 208304 untuk konfigurasi sD 0.16 dan pada
sudut SDB 308304 untuk konfigurasi sD 0.107 masing-masing sebesar 81 dan 53 .
ABSTRACT
The research of knowing flow characteristics around a bluff body had
undergone a great improvement through boundary layer philosophy. Because of
shear layer effectboundary layer contributes greatly in reducing the drag force
around the body that are subjected to the fluid flow. This shear layer on body
surfaces is affected by the pressure which occurs on body contour. Drag that was
caused by the interaction between body surface and the shear layer is highly
unwanted therefore it is needed to manipulate the flow area using methods such
as placing a disturbance rod in front of the main body circular cylinder. This
study aims to compare and complete the previous study about drag force
reduction.
This study is done numerically in 2 dimension Unsteady-RANS using
CFD software FLUENT 6.3.26 using viscous turbulence model shear stress
transport SST k-969 in narrow channel. A circular cylinder is simulated as main
bluffbody and square cylinder as disturbance body which is positioned ahead of
main body according to ratio sD 0.16 to sD 0.107. Disturbance body is
positioned variably at 945 20304050 and 60 with gap 948 0.4 mm. Reynolds
number according to cylinder diameter is 2.32 x 104 and 3.12 x 104 for sD 0.16
configuration 3.48 x 104 and 4.68 x 104 for sD 0.107 configuration.
The study result shows that positioning disturbance body on the upstream
circular cylinder hasten the flow transition from laminar to turbulent boundary
layer. The best drag force reduction occurs at 81 on cylinder with SDB angle
208304 for sD 0.16 configuration and 53 on cylinder SDB angle 308304 for sD 0.107
configuration.
