STUDY OF CARBON BLACK PYROLYSIS FROM WASTE TIRES

ABSTRAK

Penumpukan limbah ban akhir-akhir ini merupakan masalah lingkungan yang cukup besar di dunia termasuk di Indonesia. Ban membutuhkan waktu yang lama untuk terdegradasi secara alami dikarenakan ban terbuat dari bahan karet dalam bentuk CxHy yang mempunyai kandungan karbon serta volatile matter yang tinggi. Berbagai penelitian dan tindakan telah dilakukan untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut salah satunya adalah proses pirolisis Penelitian ini difokuskan untuk proses produksi carbon black yang diperoleh dari proses pirolisis ban bekas. Penelitian studi pirolisis ban bekas menjadi carbon black bertujuan untuk mempelajari pengaruh laju pemanasan ukuran partikel waktu pirolisis dan suhu pirolisis terhadap besarnya kandungan fixed carbon serta karakteristik carbon black. Proses pirolisis dilakukan menggunakan reaktor semi batch stainless steel unstirred berkapasitas 1150 cm3 beroperasi pada tekanan 1 atm. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan tiga tahap. Tahap pertama dalam penelitian ini adalah memperkecil ukuran ban bekas sampai menjadi serbuk ban. Tahap selanjutnya ban bekas sebanyak 30 gram dengan berbagai ukuran -1016 mesh -1620 mesh dan -2030 mesh dimasukkan ke dalam reaktor. Nitrogen dialirkan ke dalam reaktor dengan rate 1 litermenit dengan tujuan untuk membersihkan produk gas oksigen yang dapat mengganggu jalannya proses pirolisis. Kemudian sampel dipanaskan sampai suhu 400 500 atau 600 C dan dipertahankan pada variabel waktu yaitu selama 30 60 atau 90 menit. Laju pemanasan diatur 10 15 dan 20 oC menit dengan mengatur kuat arus listrik. Tahap terakhir adalah pengambilan produk berupa carbon black dan ditentukan kandungan fixed carbon serta dilakukan analisis produk untuk mengetahui pengaruh laju pemanasan ukuran partikel waktu pirolisis dan suhu pirolisis terhadap kandungan fixed carbon dan karakteristik carbon black yang dihasilkan. Laju pemanasan ukuran partikel waktu dan suhu pirolisis mempunyai pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap kandungan fixed carbon serta karakteristik carbon black. Kandungan fixed carbon tertinggi 61.8984 dihasilkan pada laju pemanasan 20 oCmenit ukuran partikel -2030 mesh waktu pirolisis 90 menit dan suhu pirolisis 400 oC. Karakteristik carbon black terbaik dengan analisis bilangan iodine 315.27 mgg ash content 3.0983 dihasilkan pada laju pemanasan 10 oCmenit ukuran partikel -1016 mesh waktu pirolisis 90 menit dan suhu pirolisis 600 oC. Moisture content terbaik dihasilkan pada laju pemanasan 20 oCmenit ukuran partikel -2030 mesh waktu pirolisis 90 menit dan suhu pirolisis 600 oC.


ABSTRACT

The build up of tires waste lately was a considerable environmental problem in the world including in Indonesia. Tires takes a long time to naturally degraded because it are made of rubber material in form CxHy that having carbon content and high volatile matter. Various studies have been carried out to overcome these problems one of which is a pyrolysis. This research was focused on the production of carbon black from pyrolysis of tires. The research studies of tires pyrolysis to produce carbon black have aims to study the effect of heating rate particle size pyrolysis time and pyrolysis temperature on the magnitude of the fixed carbon contain and the characteristics of carbon black. The pyrolysis process was done using a semi-batch unstirred stainless steel reactor with a capacity of 1150 cm3 operating at 1 atm. The research was done in three stages. The first stage of this research is to reduce the size of the tires to be a tire scrap. The next stage was 30 grams scrap tires of various of sizes -1016 mesh -1620 mesh and -2030 mesh was feed into the reactor. Nitrogen flowed into the reactor at rate of 1 literminute to clean the product gas oxygen that can disrupt the process of pyrolysis. Then the sample is heated to a temperature of 400 500 or 600 C and maintained at certain time of 30 60 or 90 minutes. Heating rate is set at 10 15 and 20 Cmin by setting the electric current. The last step was taking the carbon black product calculating the yield and analyze the product to determine the effect of heating rate particle size pyrolysis time and pyrolysis temperature on the fixed carbon contain and characteristics of the carbon black produced. Heating rate particle size time and pyrolysis temperature has a significant influence on the fixed carbon containyield and the characteristics of the carbon black. The highest fixed carbon contain 61.8984 is generated at the heating rate of 20 Cmin the particle size of -2030 mesh pyrolysis time of 90 minutes and the pyrolysis temperature of 400 oC. The best characteristics of carbon black represented by iodine number analysis 315.27 mgg ash content 3.0983 is generated at the heating rate of 10 Cmin the particle size of - 1016 mesh pyrolysis time of 90 minutes and the pyrolysis temperature of 600 oC. The best moisture content product was generated on the heating rate of 20 Cmin the particle size of -2030 mesh pyrolysis time of 90 minutes and the pyrolysis temperature of 600 C.
