THE EFFECT OF EFFECTIVE OVERBURDEN PRESSURE AND SOIL PLASTICITY ON UNDRAINED SHEAR STRENGTH OF VERY SOFT TO STIFF NORMALLY CONSOLIDATED CLAY

ABSTRAK

Kekuatan geser suatu masa tanah merupakan perlawanan internal tanah tersebut per satuan luas terhadap keruntuhan atau pergeseran sepanjang bidang geser dalam tanah tersebut. Pengetahuan tentang kekuatan geser tanah dan sifat-sifat fisik tanah lainnya akan sangat membantu dalam merencanakan suatu konstruksi yang sesuai dengan kondisi tanahnya aman dan ekonomis. Akan tetapi penyelidikan tanah di lapangan -terutama boring - masih dirasa sangat mahal membutuhkan waktu dan belum tentu dapat dipercaya hasilnya. Mengingat begitu pentingnya pengetahuan tentang kekuatan geser tanah tersebut berbagai usaha telah dilakukan untuk menentukan kuat geser suatu tanah secara empiris. Hubungan yang cukup mudah telah diberikan oleh beberapa peneliti terdahulu yaitu seperti Skempton 1957 Leonards 1962 Mesri 1975 Larsson 1977 Windisch dan Yong 1989. Korelasi-korelasi yang dikemukakan para ahli tersebut memiliki perbedaan dalam perumusan sehingga sulit menentukan perumusan mana yang akan dipakai serta ada kalanya setiap korelasi memberikan hasil yang sangat berbeda. Penelitian ini merupakan penehtian di laboratorium dengan melakukan serangkaian pengujian terhadap benda uji untuk menentukan besarnya perbandingan kekuatan geser undrained Su tanah dengan tegangan overburden efektif dan sifat-sifat tanah yang dapat ditentukan dengan mudah di laboratorium seperti Indeks Plastisitas. Uji yang dilakukan dengan dua jenis pengujian yaitu dengan alat Vane Vane Shear Test dan dengan alat uji geser tekanan tak tersekap Unconfined Compression Test menunjukkan hasil bahwa Su lebih dominan dipengaruhi oleh tegangan overburden efektifhya dibandingkan pengaruh dari plastisitas tanahnya. Dari dua bentuk hubungan yang dibuat yaitu dalam persamaan linear tunggal rasio Su dengan p0 dalam fungsi Indeks Plastisitas dan linear ganda didapatkan bahwa plastisitas tanah justru mengurangi besarnya harga Su. Untuk nilai PI 120 plastisitas tanah masih menunjukkan pengaruh terhadap pengurangan nilai Su akan tetapi untuk nilai PI 120 pengaruh dari plastisitas sangat keciltidak ada.


ABSTRACT

Shear strength of soil mass is defined as an internal resistance force of soil to a failure or slide along a given sectioned area. The knowledge of shear strength and other engineering properties of soil is very important in the process of design to obtain safe and economic construction design. Unfortunately field subsurface investigation of soil especially boring is still considered relatively very costly time consuming and yet the results may not be completelyreliable. Therefore many efforts have been done to build simple empirical relationships that relate the undrained shear strength with other engineering properties of soil. Simple relationships on the basis of the undrained shear strength and effective overburden pressure ratio as function of index plasticity had been proposed by some experts for example Skempton 1957 Mesri 1975 Larsson 1977 and Windisch Yong 1989. However the formulas obtained from these relationships still widely variable so that it is sometimes confusing for engineer to determine which formula is to follow. A laboratory experimental research to obtain relationships among undrained shear strength effective overburden pressure and plasticity index is presented in this thesis. Some samples of Bentonite-Kaolinite mixture slurry under a given effective overburden pressure are tested with two different devices. Vane Shear Test and Unconfined Compression Test are applied to those samples. The results showed that undrained shear strength is influenced more by effective overburden pressure than its plasticity. Two forms of single and multiple linear regression are used to express these relationships. From the research it is also found that for PI 120 and PI 120 the results showed different tendenciess. In soils with PI 120 the undrained shear strength increases with the increase of effective overburden pressure but it decrease with the increase of soil plasticity index. On the other hand in soils with PI 120 the increase of soil plasticity index has no significant effect to the magnitude of undrained shear strength.
