Description:

Alt. Description

Demihull separation is identified as one among those parameters which significantly influences technical and economical aspects of a catamaran. From the technical point of view demihull separation utterly governs the hydrodynamics performances of catamarans, namely motions, resistance, manoeuvring, as well as cross structural response characteristics. Whilst in the economical aspect hull separation governs the effective deck area which further imply on the attainable effective payload The judgement in determining demihull separation within catamaran design should therefore consider those technical and economnical aspects. By way of optimization method related to the determination of demihull separation best technical and economical performances may be reasonably achieved This thesis discusses the application of optimization method in governing the catamaran demihull separation by considering certain hydrodynamics attributes, namely sway, heave, and roll mode of motions, as well as the primary wave structural responses which include vertical shear force, horizontal shear force, and transverse bending moment on the cross-deck structure. Catamaran motions and structural responses in this respect are predicted by employing the so called Frank close-fit technique combined with the 2-dimensional strip theory. Further, the optimization procedure is accomplished by adopting the golden section method related to cubical polynomial interpolation. Results of the current study exhibit a peculiar trends where sway, heave, roll, and heave acceleration amplitudes pertinently decrease in association with the increasing of demihull separation. Significant change in motion responses is witnessed to take place within the demihull separation range between 0.2 Lbp and 0.4 Lbp. The vertical shear force, horizontal shear force, and transverse bending moment on the cross-deck structure gradually decreases in accordance with the increasing of demihull separation for the wavelength ranges larger than 1.0 PL, where PL is the distance between demihulls centrelines. In the case where wavelength is less than 1.0 PL the intensities of those responses increase in parallel with the increasing of demihull separation up to 0.4 Lbp. Nonetheless, beyond the demihull separation of 0.4 Lbp an opposite trend is acquired Up to the demihull separation of 0.4 Lbp intensity of transverse bending moment is highly dominated by the fluid interaction trapped abetween the demihulls, whereas above 0.4 Lbp the importance of cross deck span takes place. By accounting for the motion and wave load response characteristics the current case study on catamaran yields an optimum demihull separation of 0.345 Lbp or 79.40 ft (24.20 m).
