Cortical Bone Segmentation on Dental Panoramic Radiographs Using Watershed Integration with Level Set Based Active Contour

Dewasa ini banyak dilakukan penelitian yang berhubungan dengan citra medis yang bertujuan membantu dokter untuk menganalisa sebuah penyakit. Salah satu penelitian yang ada adalah mendeteksi osteporosis berdasarkan citra dental panoromic radiograph. Daerah yang dianalisa pada penelitian sebelumnya adalah lebar dari cortical bone. Dalam penelitian ini dilakukan cortical bone pada citra dental panoramic radiograph. Penelitian ini mengintegrasi metode watershed dengan active contour berbasis level set. Watershed memiliki kelebihan mampu membentuk contour tertutup dengan ketebalan satu pixel. Namun sering terjadi segmentasi berlebih. Sedangkan active contour berbasis level set dapat bergerak dinamis mendeteksi tepi obyek serta dapat memisahkan atau menggabungkan secara alami selama evolusi kurva sehingga kurva tidak terjebak oleh obyek lain yang bukan cortical bone. Namun inisialisasi kurva dilakukan secara manual untuk mendeteksi obyek. Dengan mengintegrasikan kedua metode ini inisialisasi kurva dilakukan secara otomatis. Uji coba dilakukan pada sampel cortical bone pada sisi kanan dan kiri dengan batas threshold 90 dan inisialisasi kurva dapat dilakukan secara otomatis evolusi kurva dengan metode integrasi citra watershed dengan active contour berbasis level set mencapai tepat pada Boundary. Hasil kinerja pada program watershed berintegrasi dengan active contour berbasis level set menghasilkan hasil yang lebih baik dibanding dengan kinerja dari program watershed yaitu memiliki selisih akurasi 7.80 .


There have been a lot of researches concerned with medical image for assisting medical doctor to diagnoses some diseases. One of the researches is detection of osteoporosis based on dental panoramic radiographs. In the previously research cortical bone has been measured as one of the features. In this work we propose a method for segmenting cortical bone. The metode integrates watershed and level set based active contour. Watershed able to create close countour with thickness of one pixel. But the metode has problem of over segmentation. Level set based active contour can move dynamically to the boundary of the object and separate or merge naturally during evolution of curve. The curve will not include objects which are not cortical bone but it need to initialize a curve manually to detect an object. By Combining both methods recognition of curve can be initialized automatically. Testing has been done on samples of cortical bone on right and left side with threshold of 90. Curve can be initialized automatically. The evolution of curve done by combining watershed image level set based active contour has better performance of 7.80 than the one done by watershed only.
