Kolom Preflash dan Pipestill adalah dua unit utama dari industri kilang minyak bumi yang saling terkait satu dengan yang lainnya. Pada mulanya unit utama yang digunakan oleh industri kilang minyak adalah (Crude Oil Refinery Unit) beserta furnace-nya. Seiring dengan berkembangnya teknologi maka penggunaan unit preflash column untuk memisahkan light naptha terlebih dahulu sebelum masuk ke pipestill menjadi populer karena konfigurasi seperti ini dapat menghemat banyak energi. Pedoman pengoperasian unit operasi dari proses kimia selalu bertujuan pada keamanan proses, tercapainya kapasitas produksi, dan tercapainya spesifikasi produk yang diinginkan. Diasumsikan bahwa variabel-variabel proses akan selalu berubah seiring berjalannya proses. Dalam penelitian ini diambil sistem pengendali Model Predictive Control (MPC) yang diperkirakan memiliki respon yang lebih baik dalam mengendalikan Kolom Preflash dan Pipestill. Simulasi steady state dan dinamik dijalankan dengan menggunakan program Aspen DynamicTM dan MatlabTM. Untuk mengamati performa pengendalian diberikan gangguan laju alir sebesar ±15% dan gangguan komposisi sebesar ±25% fraksi massa OIL-1 ke dalam proses. Performa pengendali konvensional dan MPC dibandingan dengan menggunakan parameter Integral of The Absolute Value of The Error (IAE). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa MPC memiliki performa yang lebih baik.

Preflash and Pipestill Column are two main units of petroleum processing industry which are interconnected each other. Recently the main unit used by this industry is Crude Oil Refinery Unit. As the time goes by therefore the use of Preflash and Pipestill column became more popular because of its ability to reduce energy cost. The operation guidelines for these unit is always aim to safety and certain product flowrate and quality. In this work assumptions are made where, process variables always change as the process goes. Model Predictive Control was used because of it had better response compared to the conventional controller. The steady state and dynamic simulation was conducted using Aspen DynamicTM, and MatlabTM.To analyze the performance of the controllers, ± 15% flowrate disturbances and ± 25% OIL-1 mass fraction as composition disturbances were applied to the process. The dynamic performance of the controllers was compared between MPC and conventional controller using Integral of The Absolute Value of The Error (IAE). The result showed the dynamic performance of MPC controller were more superior than that of conventional controller.
