Dalam beberapa proses seringkali perlu untuk memonitor dua atau lebih karakteristik kualitas secara bersama-sama. Untuk itu dikembangkan diagram kontrol yang mempertimbangkan beberapa karakteristik kualitas secara bersama-sama yang disebut dengan pengontrolan kualitas multivariat. Saat ini telah banyak dikembangkan diagram kontrol multivariat yang digunakan dalam pengontrolan variabilitas proses, antara lain diagram kontrol multivariat yang didasarkan pada matriks kovariansi (Alt dan Smith, 1988) dan diagram kontrol multivariat yang didasarkan pada matriks korelasi (Sindelar, 2007). Sejauh ini belum pernah dibandingkan kinerja dari diagram kontrol yang berbasis pada matriks kovariansi dan matriks korelasi. Dalam penelitian ini akan dibandingkan kinerja dari diagram kontrol multivariat berdasarkan matriks kovariansi dan diagram kontrol multivariat berdasarkan matriks korelasi dengan menggunakan Average Run Length (ARL). Penerapan dilakukan pada data quality control pita plastik di PT. Yanaprima Hastapersada dengan melibatkan lima karakteristik kualitas yaitu berat pita, lebar pita, kuat tarik pita, kekuatan tarik pita per berat pita, dan kemuluran pita. Berdasarkan hasil simulasi dan aplikasi ditunjukkan bahwa secara umum diagram kontrol multivariat berdasarkan matriks kovariansi lebih sensitif dari diagram kontrol multivariat berdasarkan matriks korelasi.

Sometimes in some process, it is necessary to monitor the quality characteristics of two or more together. Control chart which is developed for takes into account several quality characteristics that are jointly called multivariate quality control. Today has been developed multivariate control charts which are used in controlling variability process, among other multivariate control charts based on the covariance matrix (Alt and Smith, 1988) and multivariate control charts based on the correlation matrix (Sindelar, 2007). So far have not compared the performance of control charts based on the covariance matrix and correlation matrix. In this study will be compared the performance of multivariate control charts based on covariance matrices and multivariate control charts based on the correlation matrix using the Average Run Length (ARL). Application performed on plastic ribbon data at PT. Yanaprima Hastapersada. This research involved five quality characteristics, namely denier (weight ribbon), bandwidth, strength (tensile strength of ribbon), tenacity (strength of ribbon per denier), and elongation (elasticity of ribbon). Based on the result of simulation and application indicated that in general multivariate control charts based on the covariance matrix is more sensitive than multivariate control charts based on a matrix correlation.
