[ Description ]

Alt. Description

Hydroxylation of benzene with H2O2 as oxidant by use of CuO/TS-1 catalysts has been studied. TS-1 was initially synthesized by hydrothermal process, followed by impregnation of Cu(NO)2.3H2O precursor on TS-1 to produce CuO/TS-1 catalysts. The resulting catalysts were characterized by use of XRD, FTIR, FTIR pyridine and N2 adsorption-desorption. The catalytic activity of the catalysts was tested on benzene to phenol hydroxylation reaction and the reaction products were analyzed using gas chromatography (GC). The results from XRD and FTIR showed that both of TS-1 and CuO/TS-1 catalysts have an orthorombic structure with MFI type. A present of CuO on TS-1 have increased the amount of Lewis acid sites of the catalysts. Catalytic activity of 1%CuO/TS-1 catalyst was higher than that of ZSM-5, CuO, and TS-1, which indicated the contribution of Cu2+ and Ti4+ ions as active sites of the CuO/TS-1 catalysts. As the amount of CuO loaded on TS-1 was increased for more the 2%, however, blockage of the TS-1 active sites with CuO aggregates was observed, resulting in a decrease in the surface area and catalytic activity of the catalysts. The best condition of the benzene hydroxylation reaction with H2O2 using 1%CuO/TS-1 catalyst was at the reaction temperature of 70°C, 2 hour reaction time and acetic acid as solvent with phenol product reached 3,53 mmol with selectivity to phenols of 75,5%.
