Perubahan kembang susut yang paling krusial di tanah ekspansif umumnya terjadi pada zona aktif. Makalah ini merupakan studi karakteristik tanah ekspansif pada zona aktif yang mengalami proses pembasahan dan pengeringan. Untuk melihat perilaku tersebut maka dilakukan pengujian tanah ekspansif undisturbed di daerah Citraland Surabaya pada kedalaman 1m 2m 3m 4m 5m. Dari pengujian tersebut ditentukan zona aktif pada daerah tersebut kemudian di setiap kedalaman 1 m dilakukan penambahan dan pengurangan kadar air. Dari setiap penambahan dan pengurangan kadar air dilakukan pengujian swelling pressure swelling potential dan uncofined compression. Khusus untuk pengujian CBR percobaan dilakukan dalam keadaan disturbed dengan kadar air disesuaikan dengan proses pembasahan dan pengeringan. Dari percobaan tersebut hasil menunjukkan bahwa zona aktif di daerah tersebut berada antara 4 5 m. Secara umum dari kelima kedalaman siklus dry wetting menunjukkan bahwa alur karakteristik yang terjadi tidak terlalu berbeda meskipun kadar air inisial dan kepadatan memiliki nilai yang berbeda. Untuk kadar air inisial antara 40 - 80 besarnya Swelling potential antara 14 sampai 25 sedangkan Swelling Pressure 93 kPa sampai 195 kPa. Dan besarnya qu 19 kPa sampai 91 kPa serta CBR antara 2 sampai 9.


The Change of volume due to expansion and shrinkage of expansive soil mostly take place in the active zone. This paper presents the study of characteristics of expansive soil in the active zone that experiencing wetting and drying process. The laboratory tests that include swelling pressure swelling potential and unconfined compression were carried out on undisturbed samples taken from the depth 1 m 2 m 3 m 4 m 5 m to find out the behavior of expansive soil Citraland Area Surabaya. Several samples for each depth were kept outside to reduce its water content and several samples were added with water to increase its water content prior the swelling tests. In addition CBR tests was also conducted an each samples for various water content. The active zone that determined using liquidity Index LI was found between 4 m to 5m. The result show the swelling pressure swelling potential and unconfined compression strength of soil samples taken from each depths in the active zone with initial water content of 40 - 80 are quite the same that are ranging from 14 to 25 for swelling potential 93 kPa to 195 kPa for swelling pressure and 19 kPa to 91 kPa for unconfined compression strength. While the CBR value ranging from 2 to 9.
