Arang merupakan suatu karbon yang sebagian besar terdiri dari zat hidup seperti kayu-kayuan yang dapat dimanfaatkan ulang. Pemanfaatan arang saat ini masih sangat kurang karena sebagian besar masyarakat lebih mengandalkan penggunaan kompor LPG. Keadaan ini menyebabkan produsen arang semakin banyak mengalami kerugian. Pada kenyataannya penggunaan kompor LPG juga masih menemui banyak masalah, antara lain minimnya pengetahuan masyarakat tentang cara penggunaan LPG yang baik dan benar. Permasalahan-permasalahan di atas dapat diatasi dengan menggunakan energi alternatif, dan peningkatan arang sebagai bahan bakar. Dalam tugas akhir ini telah dirancang sebuah alat pengembangan dari bahan bakar arang yang akan diolah menjadi briket secara otomatis dan dikontrol dengan menggunakan Programmable Logic Controller. Sensor yang digunakan pada otomasi alat pembuat briket arang adalah sensor Infrared dan Limit Switch. Sensor-sensor tersebut berfungsi sebagai inputan yang terkoneksi dengan PLC untuk mengontrol otomasi pembuatan briket. Pada PLC juga terdapat pengaturan timer yang dapat dikombinasikan dengan sensor-sensor tersebut untuk mengatur proses pembuatan briket secara otomatis.Tingkat keberhasilan pada alat otomasi pembuatan briket arang adalah 75%, yaitu dilihat dari ukuran panjang dan diameter briket. Dan waktu yang dibutuhkan dalam otomasi pembuatan briket arang adalah 12-13 detik. Hasil briket yang tepat dipengaruhi oleh komposisi adonan briket.

Charcoal is a carbon consisting largely of living matter such as timber that can be used in many times. Utilization of charcoal is still very poor because most of the people rely on the using of LPG. This situation lead to a growing number of charcoal producers suffered losses. In fact, the using of LPG also encounters many problems, including the lack of knowledge for public about how to use the LPG correctly. The problems above can be overcome by using alternative energy and an increasing of charcoal as fuel. This thesis has designed a development tool from fuel that is going to be processed into charcoal briquettes automatically and controlled by using a Programmable Logic Controller. A sensor which is used in automatic equipment maker charcoal briquettes is Infrared sensors and Limit Switch. The sensors have a function as an input for connecting the PLC to control the automatic of the manufacture of briquettes. In the PLC also has a timer that can be combined with sensors to regulate the process of making briquettes automatically. The successful rating in the manufacture of automatic charcoal briquettes tool is 75%, which is seen from the length and diameter of the briquettes. The time required in the manufacture of automatic charcoal briquettes is 12-13 seconds. The exactly briquettes results are influenced by the composition of the briquettes’ dough.
