Optimation of Heat Energy and Embodied Energy in Low Rise Residential Building in Hot-Humid Tropics

ABSTRAK

Dalam tiga dekade terakhir sustainablity menjadi perhatian penting untuk pengembangan lingkungan binaan. Desain yang peduli terhadap hemat energi dan lingkungan menjadi isu penting dalam usaha menjaga kesehatan dan kenyamanan lingkungan. Disamping itu terjadinya peningkatan kebutuhan akan hunian massal terutama untuk golongan ekonomi menengah kebawah di dalam dunia berkembang khususnya Indonesia. Pemerintah perancang arsitek dan developer mengusulkan konsep sustainable arsitektur yang tidak hanya hemat pada bidang konsumsi energi ramah lingkungan tetapi juga hemat biaya. Untuk menangani masalah hunian masyarakat golongan ekonomi menengah kebawah di perkotaan. Pemerintah membangun rumah susun tiga sampai empat lantai. Bangunan didisain dengan sistem pasif cooling untuk mengurangi biaya operational bangunan dan menyesuaikan dengan lingkungan. Di daerah tropis meskipun bangunan menggunakan ventilasi untuk mencapai kenyamanan peningkatan energi panas dan embodied energy masih terjadi. Sehingga timbul usaha untuk mengoptimumkan penggunaan energi dengan desain bangunan. Hal tersebut menimbulkan argumentasi bahwa desain bangunan dapat mendukung optimasi energi di dalam bangunan. Hal ini merupakan dasar dari penelitian ini untuk menganalisa aspek desain dari bangunan bertingkat rendah yang dapat menghasilkan energi optimum. Dampak energi panas panas yang rendah dan pengurangan embodied energy bangunan merupakan usaha optimasi energi. Penelitian ini menggunakan bangunan bertingkat rendah sebagai sampel karena secara umum bangunan tersebut sering digunakan untuk hunian golongan ekonomi menengah ke bawah. Untuk memprediksi kondisi energi panas di dalam bangunan penelitian ini menggunakan metode simulasi dengan bantuan komputer. Disamping itu perhitungan terhadap embodied energy juga dilakukan. Parameter desain digunakan untuk menganalisa pengaruh desain terhadap energi bangunan. Kemudian dilanjutkan dengan proses optimasi untuk mendapatkan desain yang hemat terhadap energi panas dan embodied energy Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa bangunan hunian bertingkat rendah yang optimum terhadap energi panas dan embodied energy merupakan bangunan yang berorientasi utara-selatan dan memiliki kekompakan bentuk yang rendah dan proporsi dinding yang rendah.


ABSTRACT

Over the last three decades sustainability has been the focus for developing build environment. In the recent past in particular design that concerns with energy efeciency and environment becames an important issue in the effort of maintaining healthy and comfortable environments. In this regard the increasing deman upon mass and high density housing especially for low-tomiddle income earner in developing countries such as Indonesia has required government designers architects and developers to propose a concept of sustainable housing which is not only eficient in terms of energy consumption enviromentally friendly but also cost effective. To accommodate low-to-middle income earner in the city goverment has proposed a walk-up flat of three to four stories. As to reduce cost for operating the building the design adopted passive system for controlling the environment. This in conseqence leaded to an elongated form. Although such form can promote ventilation for restoring comfort in the tropics the design can also increase heat gain and embodied energy in the building which then raise an issue of optimum forms and optimum use of energy. From this point It can be argued that design of building will contribute to optimisation of energy in the building. It is on this basis the research is focused on which is investigating design features of walk-up flats that can result in energy optimisation by lowering thermal effect on building and at the same time reducing embodied energy in the building. The study considered several walk-up flats in Surabaya as samples. The building was taken because it was regarded as representing the current trend in design of low-rise house for the low-to-midlle income earner in Indonesia. The study adopted computer simulation method to predict the performance of the building. In addition profile of embodied energy of the building was calculated. Design parameters was set up and used for analysing the contribution of the design to building performance. Optimisation was then proceeded to indicate design that offering most protection to heat stress and incoporate less embodied energy. The research findings showed that walk-up flat that is elongated toward east-west and has lower degree of compactness and relatively low proportion of wall is considered as optimum in terms of heat and embodied energy.
