NUMERICAL MODELING OF HIGH VELOCITY FLOW IN THE COMPOUND CHANNEL

ABSTRAK

This paper deals with the numerical simulation of high-velocity flow through a compound channel. In the compound channel in addition to primary flow there are secondary flow from the overbank to the main channel so that the flow cannt be modelled only in one dimension but should be modeled in two dimensions. HIVEL2D is a freesurface depth-averaged two-dimensional model designed specifically for flow fields that contain super-critical and sub-critical regimes as well as the transitions between the regimes. The models provides numerically stable solutions of advection-dominated flow fields containing oblique shocks Reviews such as standing waves and hydraulic jumps. Numerical models calibrated with a physical models that are measured in the laboratory. Numerical model of HIVEL2D can simulate secondary flow and hydraulic jump phenomenon that describe changes in flow from super-critical to subcritical flows. Model is also able in describing water level profile both in the side and main stilling basins. The magnitude and direction of primary and secondary velocity can be seen clearly. Numerical model can be used as a tool for designing a stilling basin to reduce the cost and time.
