TRIPLE HELICAL RODS WITH GAP AS A PASSIVE CONTROL DEVICE FOR REDUCING FLUID FORCES ON A CYLINDER

ABSTRAK

Traditional type of suppression devices that are highly effective in reducing Vortex-Induced Vibration VIV of deepwater risers orand conductors of offshore platforms is helical strakes. Unfortunately such device could magnify hydrodynamic forces occurred on the cylindrical members. This paper presents the results of an experimental study on an innovative device of triple helical rods with gap for suppressing fluid forces that occur in a flexibly-mounted cylinder due to steady currents. The research was experimentally carried out in a wind tunnel using cylinder models of 25.4mm in diameter D and 290mm in length. Each rods diameter was 1.5mm 0.06D and helically attached to the cylinder with a gap of 1.5mm 0.06D. The cylinders were horizontally positioned in the test section to incoming steady wind flow with varies velocities to reach Reynolds number Re in the range of 102 to 106. The model has been validated and showed a good comparation to the other relevant result. The results indicated a good performance of the device for reducing the drag and lift forces. At Re 2.36 61620 104 the model successfully reduced drag force by 50. Meanwhile the model could reduced lift force by 25 at Re 2.19 61620 104.
