ABSTRAK

Metal hydride is safe and efficient hydrogen storage device for vehicle application. Magnesium alloy is promising material as hydrogen storage device. In this research magnesium aluminum and nickel powders with the composition of Mg2-xAlxNi x 0 0.10.25 and 0.5 are synthesized by reactive ball milling under 5 bar pressure of hydrogen H2 for 20 hours milling time. Ball to powder ratio BPR is 101 for ball and powder. For simulation absorption of hydrogen powder after reactive ball milling have hydrogenated using hydrogen 5 bar at 300C for one hour. TGA analysis had done for calculated desorption of hydrogen. Dopping aluminum during reactive ball milling synthesis did not produce Mg2-xAlxNi alloy but allowed to obtain solid solution of aluminum in magnesium Mg-Al for composition of x025. Solid solution magnesium had formed during heating at 300C. Active layer of hydrogen H2 is successfully produced after reactive ball milling. These active layers were activated as first hydrogen activation before hydrogenation treatment. Doped-aluminum had not completely reacted with magnesium hence residual aluminum had decreased hydrogen absorption and increased desorption temperature of magnesium alloy. Doped-aluminum on magnesium alloy for x 00.1 0.25 and 0.5 shown hydrogen absorption properties are 275 0046 1032 061 of total mass in the first cyclic at temperature of 325C 350C 340C and 340C respectively.
