A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF HAZELNUT SHELL ACTIVATED CARBON AND COMMERCIAL ACTIVATED CARBON IN CrVI SOLIDIFICATION PROCESS USING FLY ASH AND CEMENT

ABSTRAK

Berbagai macam teknologi telah dikembangkan untuk melindungi lingkungan dari polutan. Salah satunya bertujuan untuk mengubah limbah berbahaya dan beracun B-3 menjadi tidak berbahaya dan beracun atau mengurangi potensi kelolosannya ke lingkungan. Proses stabilisasisolidifikasi SS merupakan salah satu teknologi yang sering dipergunakan dengan penambahan semen kapur fly ash dan lain-lain. Sehingga perlu dilakukan penelitian untuk meningkatkan daya ikat produk hasil SS dengan biaya seekonomis mungkin. Penelitian ini membandingkan penambahan karbon aktif komersial dan tempurung kemiri serta variasi komposisi terhadap kestabilan hasil SS yang mengandung limbah CrVI buatan. Variasi perbandingan komposisi semen portlandfly ash dan karbon aktif sebesar 973 946 919 dari total berat kering campuran. Benda uji direndam buffer asetat pH 2 dengan variasi waktu perendaman 0 7 14 dan 28 hari. Parameter yang diujikan adalah kuat tekan dan Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure TCLP. Data penelitian menunjukkan bahwa proses SS dengan karbon aktif dapat menurunkan tingkat kelolosan CrVI dan meningkatkan nilai kuat tekan. Secara keseluruhan penggunaan karbon aktif tempurung kemiri sebagai bahan aditif-nya terbukti lebih baik dibandingkan dengan karbon aktif komersial. Komposisi karbon aktif pada tiap jenis karbon aktif tidak mempengaruhi secara signifikan hasil kuat tekan dan kelolosan Cr. Dimana komposisi I dengan 3 karbon aktif merupakan komposisi paling ekonomis untuk hasil TCLP dan kuat tekan yang diinginkan pada setiap jenis karbon aktif.


ABSTRACT

Protecting the environment from hazardous pollutants associated with waste regeneration and disposal is a major concern in todays heavily industrialized world. Thus far various technologies have been developed which transform hazardous wastes to non-toxic or reduce the potential release of toxic into the environment. One such promising technology is stabilizationsolidification SS of solid waste by means of adding cementitious binders like cement lime fly ash etc. Hence it requires a research to find the right method that is able to improve the quality of solidification products by using condenser materials as economic as possible. This research compared the addition of commercial and hazelnut shell activated carbon and also the composition variation to the stability of SS specimens contain the CrVi artificial waste. The variation of weight composition portland cementfly ash and activated carbon are 973 946 919 from the total mixture dry weight. The SS specimens were soaked in acetate buffer pH 2 solution with soaking time variations are 0 7 14 and 28 days. The quality of SS specimens were evaluated using compressive strength test and Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure TCLP. Research data showed that compressive activated carbon could decrease the CrVI leaching and increased the strength ability. The use of hazelnut shell activated carbon as an additive proved a better decrease than using commercial activated carbon. The weight composition variations in every type of activated carbon used did not significantly influence the compressive strength test results and Cr leaching level. The composition using 3 of activated carbon represented the most economical composition.
