MAKING SILICA LAYER TO THE SURFACE OF STEEL AS AN ALTERNATIVE WAYS FOR CORROSION PROTECTION

ABSTRAK

Telah banyak dilakukan usaha untuk menemukan alternative menggantikan senyawa krom hexavalen yang berbahaya dengan senyawa senyawa lain yang lebih ramah lingkungan sebagai bahan pelapis anti karat. Baru-baru ini telah dilakukan beberapa studi mengenai silica. Dalam penelitian kami akan dipakai silica dimana silica ini nantinya diharapkan bisa dipergunakan untuk melapisi logam yang tujuannya untuk mencegah terjadinya korosi dari logam yang terlapisi tersebut Salah satu alternatif proses pelapisan pada penelitian ini yaitu spesimen yang telah dibersihkan permukaannya dispray dengan asam fosfat dicelupkan ke dalam bak yang berisi larutan pelapis sodium silicate kemudian mengeringkannya di udara lalu dilanjutkan ke dalam oven bersuhu 130 oC dibiarkan selama kurang lebih 20 - 30 menit hingga cat benar benar mengering dan siap diuji kualitasnya. Kondisi spesimen logam yg telah terlapisi oleh silica tersebut diuji korositivitasnya dengan gamry instrument. Dari percobaan yang telah dilakukan diketahui bahwa ditinjau dari corrotion ratenya konsentrasi silikat yang paling efektif adalah 7.8 dengan konsentrasi asam yang digunakan adalah sebesar 8 dimana secara kuantitatif dengan menggunakan metode EIS melalui Gamry instrument didapatkan hambatan korosi yg paling besar.


ABSTRACT

It has been many researches to find the alternative to substitute chrom hexavalent compound which is dangerous with other compound which is more friendly to environment as a rustproof layer. Recently it has been several study about silica. In our research silica compound will be used with expectancy that it can prevent corrosion of that layered steel. One of the alternative of this coating process is cleaned steel is sprayed by phosphatid acid immersed to the solution of sodium silicate then dried on the open air and followed by dried in oven on 130oC for 20-30 minutes until the layer of silicate is really dried and the quality of the layer is ready to be tested. Condition of coated steel is tested for its corrosivity by Gamry instrument. From the trial which has been done can be known that from the corrosion ratethe best one is if we use 7.8 silicate and 8 phosphatid acid which quantitatively with EIS method used Gamry instrument we can get the bigest corrosion barrier.
