ABSTRAK

Pemanfaatan sumber energi alternatif yang dapat diperbarui perlu ditingkatkan mengingat semakin menipisnya cadangan bahan bakar fosil yang ada sekarang ini. Salah satu cara pemanfaatan sumber energi terbarukan adalah penggunaan etanol sebagai bahan bakar. Etanol dapat diperoleh dari hasil fermentasi bahan yang mengandung karbohidrat. Brasil merupakan negara yang telah mencanangkan program bahan bakar etanol dalam skala besar sejak terjadinya krisis minyak dan etanol yang diproduksi berasal dari tebu. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan diagram kesetimbangan suhu dengan komposisi Txy pada rentang umpan distilasi komposisi etanol hasil fermentasi nira tebu oleh Saccharomyces cereviseae. Penelitian dilakukan dalam dua tahap yaitu tahap persiapan bahan dan pemisahan. Tahap persiapan bahan meliputi pengadaan starter dan fermentasi. Proses pada fermentasi dijalankan secara batch secara anaerobik berskala laboratorium suhu di dalam fermentor dipertahankan 30 C dengan pH 5 selama 5 hari dengan tetap dilakukan pengadukan. Sebagai ragi fermentasi digunakan ragi Saccharomyces cereviceae. Tahap pemisahan dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode distilasi batch. Umpan yang digunakan merupakan larutan biner etanol air dengan kandungan berdasarkan rentang hasil fermentasi sampai kadar maksimum etanol yang mampu dihasilkan melalui fermentasi. Adapun hasil penelitian data kesetimbangan dengan menggunakan distilasi batch sederhana memiliki persen kesalahan sampai rentang -64 sampai -37 untuk data fraksi mol dalam cairan dan pada rentang kesalahan -145 sampai -31 untuk data fraksi mol dalam uap. Distilasi batch sederhana dapat digunakan untuk mengetahui diagram kesetimbangan suhu dan komposisi Txy.


ABSTRACT

Utilization of renewable alternative energy resources need to be promoted because the petroleum as unrenewable sources become decreasing. Most popular using renewable resources are ethanol as a fuel engine. Ethanol can be made from fermentation of carbohydrate material. Brazil is a country that has been announced of ethanol as fuel engine for industry scale since they face petroleum crisis. Brazils ethanol is produced from sugarcane extraction. The purpose of this experiment is to obtain vapor-liquid equilibrium data at ethanol concentration on sugarcane fermented by Saccharomyces cereviseae as feed of distillation. The experiment can be divided into two steps preparation feed material and separation. Preparation step include starter preparation and fermentation. Fermentation process is worked by anaerobic batch process in laboratory scale. The operating condition of fermentation are maintained about 30 oC pH 5 for 5 days with still stirring. In separation step use simple batch distillation system . Ethanol water system as feed of distillation is the same concentration with the product of sugarcane fermentation. The tests assay done for using simple batch distillation to gain vapor-liquid equilibrium data have percentage error between 64 and 37 for mol fraction data on liquid.While mol fraction data on vapor have percentage error between 145 and 31 . Simple batch distillation can be used to gain a vapour-liquid equilibrium Txy data.
