Description:

Logam dalam dunia industri mempunyai peran yang sangat penting, namun ada sifat logam yang kurang menguntungkan, yaitu sifatnya yang mudah korosi dan warnanya yang berubah kusam jika teroksidasi oleh udara sekitar. Maka dari itu perlu suatu langkah untuk mengatasi sifat logam yang kurang menguntungkan tersebut, salah satunya adalah dengan cara pelapisan atau elektroplating. Lapisan yang sering digunakan adalah krom. Sebelum logam dilapisi krom terlebih dahulu logam di beri lapisan dasar. Tembaga sering digunakan sebagai pelapis dasar sebelum dilapisi krom. Agar lapisan krom bisa bertahan lama, maka ketebalan dan kekasaran permukaan lapisan tembaga harus diperhatikan. Faktor yang mempengaruhi ketebalan dan kekasaran permukaan lapisan adalah besarnya tegangan dan arus yang digunakan saat proses elektroplating. Pada penelitian ini menggunakan benda kerja baja ST 37 yang akan dilapisi tembaga melalui proses elektroplating dengan memvariasikan besarnya tegangan. Variasi tegangan yang digunakan yaitu 6V, 12V, 24V, 36V, dan 48V untuk jarak anoda-katoda konstan 15 cm dan 22 cm. Sedangkan temperatur yang dipakai adalah 70°- 80°C. Kemudian spesimen yang sudah dilapisi dilakukan pengukuran ketebalan lapisan dan kekasaran permukaannya. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa untuk jarak anoda – katoda 15cm dengan kenaikan tegangan 6V sampai 48V memberikan ketebalan lapisan dari 11 hingga 106 μm dan kekasaran dari 0,5 sampai 2,42 μm. Sedangkan yang berjarak 22 cm memberikan kenaikan ketebalan antara 5 dan 36 μm dan kekasaran antara 0,35 hingga 1,46 μm.

In the world of industry metal alloy hold a very important role, but it also has major disadvantages which is corrosion, and its color will be tarnish if its oxidation by the atmosphere. That is why need an action to overcome that disadvantages, one of those action is using electroplating. Chrom is often used as layer. Before the metal alloy covered by chrom, it needs a basic layer, and copper is often used as this basic layer. Thickness and surface roughness of copper need to be attentioned, in order to make the layer cast longer. Voltage and current in used on electroplating process are the mayor factors that will effect its thickness and surface roughness. This research used steel alloy ST37 as the workpiece which will be coated with copper through electroplating process by variating the voltage. Voltage variations that will be used is between 6V, 12V, 24V, 36V, and 48V for a constant anoda – catoda dictance 15 cm and 22 cm. While temperatures is between 70 – 80 0C. After the specimen which has been coated wiil be measured its layer thickness and surface roughness. The result shows that for 15cm anoda – katoda distance and voltage increasement from 6V to 48V gives layer thickness from 11 to 106 μm and surface roughness from 0,5 to 2,42 μm. While 22cm anoda – katoda distance gives thickness increasement from 5 to 36 μm and surface roughness from 0,3 to 1,46 μm.
