ABSTRAK

Stingray adalah salah satu alat marine renewable energy yang mengubah energi arus laut menjadi energi listrik. Stingray dikembangkan dan telah dipatenkan oleh Engineering Business Limited dengan nomor paten 6731018. Komponen utama dari stingray adalah sayap yang menyerupai sayap pesawat terbang tetapi letaknya di dalam air. Prinsip kerja utama dari stingray adalah memberikan angle of attack yang positif atau negatif kepada sayap stingray relative terhadap arah arus laut sehingga sayap stingray akan bergerak naik turun. Salah satu model sederhana yang dapat digunakan untuk memprediksi karakteristik hidrodinamika dan aerodinamika pada sayap berhingga adalah dengan menggunakan teori lifting line. Pada teori lifting line vortex yang bersumbu pada sayap disebut bound vortex dan yang berada di belakang sayap disebut trailing vortices. Trailing vortices memberikan tambahan tambahan drag yang disebut induced drag. Tugas akhir ini memodelkan gaya hidrodinamika pada sayap stingray dengan teori lifting line. CFX yang merupakan program Computational Fluid Dynammics CFD digunakan untuk memodelkan trailing vortices dan distribusi tekanan. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan bahwa selisih hasil perhitungan CFX dengan teori lifting line kurang lebih 10 dan pengaruh dari foil endplates adalah mengurangi induced drag sebesar 2-5.


ABSTRACT

Stingray is one of marine renewable energy devices that extract useable electricity from tidal currents. Stingray developed and patented by the Engineering Business Limited. Patent protected including US patent 6731018. The key component of stingray is the wing like an aeroplane wing but in water. The main principal of operation is given a positive or negative angle of attack relative to the tidal stream in flow the hydroplane wing will rise and fall in oscillating motion. The simplest quantitative model used for predicting hydrodynamic and aerodynamic force on a wing of finite span is the lifting line theory. Lifting line theory considers the wing to be bound vortex and two semi infinite vortex filaments behind the wing called trailing vortices. Trailing vortices induce additional drag called induced drag. This final project try to modelling hydrodynamic force on the wing of stingray with lifting line theory. CFX is Computational Fluid Dynamics CFD program used to simulate of trailing vortices and pressure distribution. This research showing that difference calculation from CFX with lfting line theory more or less 10 and effect from foil endplates can reduce induced drag 2-5.
