KESETIMBANGAN FURFURAL-AIR PADA PROSES PEMBUATAN FURFURAL DARI TONGKOL JAGUNG

EQUILIBRIUM OF FURFURAL-WATER ON MANUFACTURING PROCESS OF FURFURAL FROM CORN COBS

ABSTRAK

Pemanfaatan tongkol jagung sebagai bahan baku pembuatan furfural sangat menguntungkan karena diantara bahan baku pembuat furfural lainnya tongkol jagung memiliki kandungan pentosan yang paling besar. Pentosan jika dihidrolisa dengan asam akan membentuk senyawa yang disebut furfural. Hal yang akan diteliti adalah data kesetimbangan suhu terhadap komposisi T-x-y pada rentang komposisi furfural dari hasil hidrolisa tongkol jagung dengan menggunakan katalis asam sulfat dengan berbagai macam variabel. Penelitian kesetimbangan furfural-air pada proses pembuatan furfural dari tongkol jagung ini meliputi dua tahapan proses yaitu proses hidrolisa dan proses distilasi. Pentosan dalam tongkol jagung dihidrolisa dengan katalis asam sulfat H2SO4 untuk membentuk furfural. Setelah proses hidrolisa kemudian dilanjutkan dengan proses distilasi untuk mendapatkan kadar furfural yang maksimum. Distilasi batch dapat digunakan untuk mengetahui data kesetimbangan suhu dan komposisi T-x-y. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian yang telah dilakukan diperoleh kandungan furfural tertinggi hasil hidrolisa adalah sebesar 55625 mol yang terjadi pada suhu hidrolisa 100 oC dengan konsentrasi asam sulfat 8. Adapun perbandingan hasil data penelitian dari proses distilasi dengan literatur memiliki persen kesalahan 6995 hingga 11088 untuk fraksi berat furfural fase cair x. Dan untuk fraksi berat furfural fase uap y memiliki persen kesalahan 083 hingga 995. Manfaat dari penelitian ini adalah untuk dapat memberikan nilai tambah dari tongkol jagung dan memberikan kontribusi akan pemenuhan kebutuhan furfural dalam negeri.


ABSTRACT

The use of corn cobs as raw materials on manufacturing furfural are very useful because among others raw materials corn cobs have the biggest pentosan content. When pentosans are hydrolized with an acid it will form a compound called furfural. The research target is equilibrium data of temperature to composition T-x-y on range of furfurals composition from hydrolizing corn cobs with presence of sulfuric acid as catalyst by many variables. The research of equilibrium of furfural-water on manufacturing process of furfural from corn cobs consists two process stage i.e. hydrolisation dan distillation. Pentosans within corn cobs are hydrolized with sulfuric acid catalyst H2SO4 to form furfural. After the hydrolisation then continue to distillation in order to get a maximum furfural purity. Distillation batch can be used to predict equilibrium data of temperature to composition T-x-y. Based on result of the research it appears the highest furfural content from hydrolisation is 55625 mmol at temperature 100 oC by sulfuric acid concentration 8. While comparison the result of research data from distillation to literature has error percentage 6995 to 11088 for mass fraction of furfural liquid phase x. And for fraction of furfural vapor phase y has error percentage 083 to 995. The benefits of this research are to give added value on corn cobs and contribution to fulfillment of domestic furfural needs.
