SYNTHESIS OF SILICA CARBON HYBRID BY SOL-GEL METHOD FOR ADSORBENT APPLICATION

ABSTRAK

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan metode sintesa hibrida silika-karbon dengan menggunakan metode sol-gel dari waterglass dengan gelatin dan PEG sebagai sumber karbon. Untuk gelatin sol silika dibuat dari waterglass yang diencerkan dengan ratio 110 konsentrasi silika 244 wt lalu dicampur kation resin H hingga dihasilkan silicic acid pH 2. Silicic acid kemudian ditambah larutan gelatin lalu diaduk dan setelah homogen diteteskan dengan rate konstan ke dalam NH4OH 1 M hingga pH 8-9. Gel lalu di aging 18 jam pada suhu kamar dikeringkan selama 24 jam pada 90oC lalu dikalsinasi pada 380oC 450oC dan 500oC selama 4 jam. Sedangkan untuk PEG waterglass encer dicampur dengan PEG yang dilarutkan dalam HCl 1 N dan ditetesi dengan NaOH 1 N hingga pH 4. Lalu gel di aging 1 jam pada suhu kamar dikeringkan selama 24 jam pada 90oC lalu dikalsinasi pada 550oC selama 4 jam. Hasil kemudian dikarakterisasi untuk mengetahui surface area volume diameter dan distribusi ukuran pori melalui analisa adsorpsi-desorpsi nitrogen. Pada konsentrasi rendah semakin besar sumber karbon maka surface area dan volume pori semakin besar serta distribusi ukuran pori semakin lebar. Untuk konsentrasi gelatin yang lebih tinggi memerlukan suhu karbonisasi yang lebih tinggi. Misalnya sampel gelatin 00216 gcm3 dikalsinasi pada 380oC surface area volume pori dan diameter pori sebesar 107258 m2g 04908 cm3g dan 1358 nm. Setelah dikalsinasi pada 450oC menjadi 396151 m2g 05201 cm3g dan 1855 nm. Diameter pori yang dihasilkan termasuk tipe mesopori. Silika karbon hibrida yang telah dibuat lalu digunakan untuk menghilangkan warna pada methylene blue adsorbat sehingga diperoleh removal untuk gelatin sebesar 9522 dan untuk PEG sebesar 9875.


ABSTRACT

This research aims to develop a method to synthesize silica-carbon hybrid using sol-gel method from waterglass with gelatin and PEG as the carbon sources. For gelatin silica sol was prepared by diluting waterglass with the ratio of 110 2.44 wt silica concentration. Then it was mixed with H cation resin to produce silicic acid pH 2. Silicic acid was added into gelatine solution then it was stirred until reach homogeneity. After that it was added with constant rate into NH4OH 1 M to form gel pH 8-9. Gel was aged for 18 hours at room temperature. Then it was dried for 24 hours at 90oC. Then the sample was calcined at 380oC 450oC and 500oC for 4 hours. And for PEG first it was dissolved in HCl 1 N. Then it was mixed with the diluted waterglass. After that NaOH 1 N was added to form gel pH 4. Gel was aged for an hour at room temperature. Then it was dried for 24 hours at 90oC. After that the sample was calcined at 550oC for 4 hours. The products were characterized to determine their surface area pore volume pore diameter and pore size distribution by adsorption-desorption of nitrogen method. For low carbon concentration surface area tends to increase with the increase of carbon sources. Increasing carbon consentration results in larger pore volume and wider pore size distribution. And for high gelatin concentration it required a higher carbonization temperature. For example sample using 00216 gcm3 gelatin after being calcined at 380oC results a surface area pore volume and pore diameter at about 107.258 m2g 0.4908 cm3g and 13.58 nm respectively after being calcined at 450oC they are increase to 396.151 m2g 0.5201 cm3g and 18.55 nm. From the view point of pore size the prepared materilas are mesopores.. Then silica carbon hybrid was used to remove the color of methylene blue as adsorbate. The removal for gelatin can reach 95.22 and for PEG 98.75.
