Hidrogen merupakan sumber energi ideal yang ramah lingkungan. Pembakaran hidrogen dapat menghasilkan energi yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan bahan bakar hidrokarbon. Selama ini, proses produksi hidrogen melalui proses fermentasi lebih banyak dipelajari dari segi kimia maupun biologi, sedangkan pengaruh fisik seperti faktor hidrodinamika masih jarang ditinjau. Hidrodinamika merupakan salah satu faktor penting pada produksi hidrogen yang melibatkan sistem multifase. Oleh karena itu tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mempelajari salah satu pengaruh faktor hidrodinamika yaitu off-bottom clearance (jarak impeler ke dasar tangki) terhadap produksi hidrogen dengan fermentasi. Off-bottom clearance berpengaruh terhadap pola aliran dan juga distribusi mikroba dalam media serta transfer massa hidrogen dari fase liquid ke fase gas. Glukosa yang digunakan sebagai substrat akan difermentasikan menggunakan bakteri Enterobacter aerogenes ADH-43. Reaktor yang digunakan dilengkapi dengan sebuah impeler tipe 6-blade 45o pitched blade turbine yang bisa diatur jaraknya dari dasar tangki pada kecepatan putar konstan yaitu 200 rpm. Off-bottom clearance divariasikan yaitu 0,2H; 0,33H; 0,5H dan 0,75H. Analisa glukosa dan bakteri menggunakan spektrofotometer UV-Vis, dan analisa konsentrasi hidrogen menggunakan hydrogen analyzer. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Off-bottom clearance berpengaruh terhadap pelepasan gas hidrogen dari substrat, dengan off-bottom clearance terbaik adalah pada 0,75H dan yield yang dihasilkan adalah 0,5821 mol hidrogen/mol glukosa terkonversi.

Hydrogen is an ideal energy source that is environmentally friendly. Hydrogen can be produced from renewable materials and produce a higher energy compared to hydrocarbonfuels. During this time, hydrogen production process.by fermentation (bio-hydrogen) more review from chemical and biological factors, and physical factors such as hydrodynamic factors are rarely studied. Hydrodynamic factor is one of the important factor affecting the bio-hydrogen production processes involving multiphase system. Therefore, this research aims to study the influence of hydrodynamic factor that is off-bottom clearance (position of the impeller from the bottom of the tank) influence to the hydrogen production process by fermentation. Off-bottom clearance is one of the important hydrodynamic factor because it can affect the flow pattern and then can affect the distribution of microbes in the media and mass transfer of hydrogen gas from liquid phase to the gas phase. Glucose is used as substrate that will be fermented by EnterobacteraerogenesADH-43 bacteria. The reactor will beusedisa stirred tankequipped witha singleimpeller type 6-blade 45opitched blade turbine which can be setted the position of the impeller from the bottom of tank at constant rotation speed of 200 rpm. The off-bottom clearance was varied 0,2H; 0,33H; 0,5H and 0,75H. The analysis of glucose and analyses of bacteria by using a spectrophotometerUV-Vis, and the analysis of hydrogen gas by using a hydrogen analyzer. The result showed thatoff-bottom clearance affect the release of hydrogen gas from the substrate, with the best configuration is 0,75H and the yield was 0,5821 mol hydrogen/mol glucoseconverted.
