Coasts are highly populous due to economic benefits causing rapid urbanization and increased population. Developments in urban context especially the waterfront have become crucial to coastal cities. Rapid urbanization affects the coastal areas and its surroundings including the extensive damage to the environment consequently affecting the marginalized fishing settlements unable to develop. The purpose of this study is to develop a sustainable fishing settlement in the coastal areas and identify key strategies of integrated planning of the fishing settlement and its linkage to the development of the waterfront area. As a case study research the study was conducted in Manado with two case studies of fishing settlement observed. Multiple cases were chosen in one study area to investigate the dynamics of the area and were chosen with considerations of specific criteria The selected respondents in this study focuses on fishermen while the government as the supervisor and observer of the development of the fishing settlement. Questionnaire and in depth interview was used to gain information.
Structure of the study consists of planning the research then desk study was conducted to find literatures concerned of the main topics to construct the questionnaire and framework. Fieldwork research was conducted with exploratory case study as an approach. After the results had tallied the quality of the existing conditions was then observed. The results of data collecting were tabulated and analysed through analytic strategy by relying on theoretical propositions. The techniques used for analysing were pattern-matching and cross-case synthesis.
The results in the study through analysed data are concepts and strategies eminent in sustainable fishing settlement and an integrated coastal planning of the waterfront area. Results include great potentials of the waterfront and fishing settlements. These potentials influences the indicators assessed through framework building. The assessment made through the framework showed the area to engage in poor sustainable concepts. Several indicators indicate priority in planning. As the coastal areas are prone to rapid urbanization with low awareness of integrated planning of the waterfront area and the settlement and low quality of life especially the environment in the fishing settlement need to be addressed.
ABSTRACT
Coasts are highly populous due to economic benefits causing rapid urbanization and increased population. Developments in urban context especially the waterfront have become crucial to coastal cities. Rapid urbanization affects the coastal areas and its surroundings including the extensive damage to the environment consequently affecting the marginalized fishing settlements unable to develop.
