Academic dress or known others as regalia have always been recognized as an important attire worn every year during each academic convocation in universities around the globe. Each year a university would hold convocation at least 2 times for graduation ceremonies. Other ceremonies are held for honouring a scholar who have achieved a degree of becoming a professor or for honouring the academic speech delivered by representative or guest from a prestigious institution in a special occasion national or international. Having worn an academic dress by the university president or other members of the institution board of senates in a convocation both as a host or a guest will give a self pride to each of the wearer for the academic dress with its specific details represent the status of high achievement in academic professionalism as well as the prestigious image of the university or institution. When worn among other representative internationally the academic dress also delivers as a symbol or identity for the nations pride. Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember ITS Surabaya as one of a prestigious academic institution in Indonesia based in the East Java island has had its reputation national and international. However until this present day the rector of ITS and other members of the senate board wear common and basic academic dress where design are poor and lack of details that could show the institution identity significantly. Based on this fact a study on a specific tradition on making cloths is brought upon this research. The author have chosen songket from the island of Sumatera among other traditional cloth making in Indonesia as a mean to incorporate it in to the complete new design of the ITS academic dress. The songket with its high cultural and artistic value expressed by the material being used the golden string and the beautiful motifs derived from its intricate weaving method is hoped to be able to enhance the new design. This research will also study on the development of motifs and concept of colours to represent the distinctive design of the ITS academic dress.
