In the first year we have a target of this research project in the scope of Optimal Power System Stabilizer Design on Single Machine Power System. This research presents a new concept for damping of the power system stabilizer (PSS) on a single machine infinite machine (SMIB) as a modern power system control. This concept is developed from the proportional and integral (PI) control concept and optimal control that has quadratic index solution method as a modern tool to design the PSS as optimal PSS. Using this concept, the stabilizers of the SMIB is designed for the turbine and excitation system side using the Riccati solution, as a character of optimal control method solving. In the simulation, the design of the optimal PSS is compared with the conventional PSS (CPSS) and No PSS system. In the final results, the application of optimal PSS can greatly improve the settling time and eigenvalue performances of frequency and voltage variations of SMIB power system.
