Description:

Pengecatan merupakan salah satu cara pelapisan pada logam dalam usaha perlindungan terhadap serangan korosi. Lapisan cat yang menempel pada logam akan memisahkan kontak langsung antara logam dengan lingkungan, sehingga resiko terjadinya serangan korosi dapat diminimalkan. Pada aplikasinya, terdapat bermacam - macam cat yang dibedakan menurut jenisnya yaitu organic dan non-organic. Selain itu menurut perbedaan wujud terdapat beberapa macam antara lain cat bubuk (powder coating) dan cat cair. Pada proses pengecatan powder coating, sebelumnya dimulai dengan perlakuan awal (pre-treatment) yang umumnya meliputi acidic cleaning dan zinc phospathing. Pada penelitian ini dipelajari pengaruh pre-treatment yang berbeda terhadap kualitas pengecatan powder coating pada baja. Pre-treatment lengkap dilakukan pada spesimen metode 1, acidic cleaning tanpa proses zinc phospathing dilakukan pada spesimen metode 2 dan untuk spesimen metode 3 tidak diberikan pre-treatment sama sekali. Pengecatan aluminium tanpa pre-treatment juga diberikan pada spesimen metode 4 untuk dibandingkan dengan metode 3. Kualitas hasil pengecatan akan diuji menggunakan salt spray test sesuai ASTM standart B117 selama 168 jam. Kualitas hasil pengecatan powder coating diukur dari parameter - parameter perubahan berat, ketebalan cat dan perubahan fisik. Ketiga parameter tersebut pada setiap akhir 24 jam pengujian salt spray. Terbentuknya produk korosi merupakan hasil dari reaksi korosi logam yang dilindungi dengan larutan garam yang mampu menembus lapisan cat. Dari penelitian ini, kualitas coating yang terbaik ditunjukkan pada baja yang mengalami pre-treatment lengkap (metode 1), dimana perubahan berat dan serangan korosi yang terjadi paling sedikit. Pada ii spesimen metode 2 yang tidak melewati proses zinc phospathing terjadi perubahan berat yang paling besar karena banyaknya media korosif yang berdifusi ke dalam lapisan cat. Serangan korosi yang terjadi banyak ditemui pada tepi - tepi spesimen. Pada baja yang tidak menggunakan pre-treatment (metode 3) menghasilkan perubahan berat yang lebih kecil dibandingkan dengan spesimen metode 2. Aplikasi tanpa pre-treatment dapat menghasilkan kualitas yang lebih baik pada penggunaan material aluminium (metode 4). Ketebalan cat tidak mengalami perubahan signifikan selama pengujian salt spray pada semua metode, hal ini menunjukkan bahwa cat tidak larut oleh media korosif.

Painting is one of any methods on metal’s coated to protect it from corrosion attack. Paint layer caused lost contact between metal with it’s environment, so it can decrease corrosion risk. In their implementation, there’re many kind of paint based on type and appearance. The most used is liquid paint, and beside it, there’s the other paint which has solid appearance with powder size called powder coating. This research studied influence of different pre-treatment of powder coated quality on steel. The first, second and third methods used mild steel as it‘s specimen. The first method used full treatment. The second one only cleaned by HCl, that was called acidic cleaning. So, the second method didn’t use zinc phospathing after acidic cleaning. Both of third and fourth methods didn’t use pre-treatment, but the fourth method used aluminum for it’s specimen The product quality tested by salt spray, it based on ASTM Standart B-117 with total time 168 hours. It was devided became 7 periods, so every period consist of 24 hours. The result of the end of each period were weight change, paint layer thickness and visual appearance, that showed the product quality. From this research obtained the best pre-treatment application for steel is specimen with full treatment (first method), it has the least weight change and the smallest corrosion attack. Next are specimen without pre-treatment (third method) and specimen without zinc phospathing (second method). Until end of test, there’s no paint layer thickness change, it showed that paint layer was insoluble by salt spray iv test. Aluminum with it’s oxide layer(fourth method) has better corrosion resistance than steel(third method), although it didn’t use pre-treatment.
