Keterbatasan persediaan kayu di Indonesia membuat aluminium dapat dijadikan sebagai bahan alternatif pembuatan komponen konstruksi kapal kayu tradisional. Bahan ini memiliki perbandingan kekuatan dan berat yang lebih kecil daripada kayu. Akan tetapi, proses pengerjaan konstruksi bermaterial aluminium membutuhkan teknik yang lebih rumit daripada konstruksi kayu. Selain itu harganya relatif lebih mahal. Penelitian ini bermaksud untuk menganalisis keunggulan dari konstruksi berbahan aluminium jika dibandingkan dengan kayu, baik bila ditinjau secara teknis maupun ekonomis. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga diharapkan dapat memberikan sumbangan tekonologi alternatif pembangunan kapal kayu tradisional karena keterbatasan persediaan kayu. Hal yang ditinjau dalam penelitian ini adalah penggunaan aluminium sebagai bahan gading dan balok geladak. Perhitungan berat menunjukkan bahwa LWT dapat dikurangi sedangkan DWT dapat ditingkatkan. Perhitungan stabilitas menunjukkan bahwa kapal dengan konstruksi seperti ini lebih stabil karena GZ bertambah. Secara ekonomis, beaya pembangunan kapal dengan konstruksi kombinasi ini relatif lebih rendah dari kapal yang sepenuhnya kayu.

Aluminium can be used as an alternative material for construction components of wooden boat. This is as a result of wood shortage in Indonesia. The strength to weight ratio of this material is lower than that of wood. However, finishing process of aluminium-contained-construction needs more complicated techniques than fully wooden construction. The objective of this final year project is to analyses the advantages of aluminium wood combined construction if compared to totally wooden construction, viewed from technical and economical aspects. Besides, this project is intended to contribute an alternative of traditional wooden boat building technology because of wood shortage. The aspect analyzed in this project is the use of aluminium as a material for frames and deck beams. Weight calculation shows that the LWT of the boat can be reduced, while the DWT can be increased substantially. This, in turn, improves the stability of the boat: GZ increases significantly. Economically, the construction costs of the combined construction boat is relatively lower than that of fully wooden construction one.
