Dalam penelitian ini telah dibuat komposit pasir silika dan magnesium oksida MgO dengan variasi komposisi MgO dan temperatur sinter. Bahan dasar yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pasir silika yang berasal dari pantai Bancar Tuban Jawa Timur Indonesia dan serbuk MgO. Komposit dibuat dengan mencampurkan pasir silika dan MgO menggunakan mortar selama 30 menit dikompaksi dan kemudian disinter pada temperatur 1050 dan 1150C untuk membentuk keramik padat. Karakterisasi dilakukan dengan menggunakan instrumen X-Ray Diffractometer XRD dan Thermomechanical Analyzer TMA. Analisis hasil pengujian XRD menggunakan perangkat lunak Rietica yang berbasis Metode Rietveld. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa temperatur sinter 1050C terbentuk fasa kuarsa fasa periklas dan fasa forsterit. Sedangkan pada temperatur sinter 1150C terbentuk fasa baru yaitu fasa enstatit. Prediksi koefisien ekspansi termal komposit berdasarkan analisis XRD berkisar antara 951-120610-6C. Hasil prediksi berdasarkan pengujian XRD tidak jauh berbeda dengan nilai koefisien ekspansi termal berdasarkan pengujian TMA dengan nilai error relatif berkisar antara 044 - 510.


Composites of silica sand and magnesium oxide MgO have been made by varying MgO content and sintering temperature. The raw materials were natural silica sands from Bancar Tuban Area East Java Indonesia and MgO powder. Composites were made by mixing the sand with the MgO powder using mortar for 30 minutes. Subsequently the samples were compacted and then sintered at 1050 and 1150C to form solid ceramics. Characterizations were done using X-Ray Diffractometer XRD and Thermomechanical Analyzer TMA. Analysis of the diffraction data was carried out using Rietica sofware based on Rietveld method. The results showed that after sintering at temperature 1050C quartz periclase and forsterite phase were formed while at temperature 1150C there was a new phase detected which was identified as enstatite phase. The thermal expansion coefficient prediction based on the XRD analysis were 9.51-12.06 ppmC. These values are almost similar with those from TMA testing being the relative error were between 0.44 and 5.10.
